Game Flow, Rotations & Expectations
What To Expect
This page explains how the games will work and what players and parents should expect once they walk into the gym.
Quick Overview
Games will run on two courts to help keep players moving.
Teams will be created as players arrive and reshuffled during the run.
Winning players stay in the rotation and continue into the next game.
Players should expect to play every 10 minutes.
When Players Arrive
Players should check in, get ready, and be prepared to start when the run begins. Teams will be created randomly as players arrive so the gym can move into live basketball as quickly as possible.
Players should listen for instructions, stay with the group, and be ready when their name or group is called.
Game Format
Players will play on two courts. If a player’s team wins, that player will continue playing. If a player’s team loses, that player should expect to play again within 10 minutes.
Team Selection
Teams will be created randomly as players arrive. If a team wins, the winning players stay on the court; however, the winning players and the new group coming onto the court will be shuffled and new teams will be created at the beginning of every game.
Why Teams Shuffle
This format rewards players for winning while also increasing the likelihood that each player gets the maximum number of games over the course of the night. It also helps players learn how to compete with different teammates.
Rotations
Players should expect to play every 10 minutes. The run will be managed and stay organized so players know when they are up and games continue moving quickly.
Playing Time
The goal is to keep players moving and give them meaningful chances to compete. Exact playing time may vary based on attendance, rotations, game flow, player participation, and how the event is organized that day.
Player Expectations
Players should compete hard, listen to adults running the event, respect the gym, respect other players, and play within the rules of the game.
Parent Expectations
Parents are encouraged to cheer for and encourage their players. We ask that parents limit coaching from the sideline so players have the freedom to read and react on the court with little to no outside instruction. Relax and enjoy the game.
What This Is Not
Players are not being ranked or selected for a team.
There may be guidance, but this is not a skills training session.
The event is centered on live basketball and competition.
Players should be ready to play with different teammates.
Player Mindset
Players should come ready to play hard, defend, communicate, share the ball, and compete even when the matchups are difficult.
The Open Run is about testing your game. That means being willing to play against strong players, adjust to new teammates, and keep competing.
